In all explanations of human consciousness, from pre-Xtian Plato, through Descartes, to twentieth century would-be analyst-of-the-mind Sigmund Freud, there is considered internal force - that possessing human, cannot be (even approaching) completely conscious of.
Our thoughts, our personality, our behaviour. Everyone notable - pagan - person-of-faith - atheist - all agree - there is a 'ghost in our machine.'
Plato's pupil, Aristotle, said the difference between humans and the beasts was human capacity for reason. Aristotle also believed the location of that reason was the soul.
Sigmund Freud is quoted as saying 'reason is not given.'
Surely 'In Your Patience Possess Ye Your Souls' suggests an intuitive explanation as to how the soul might manifest reason - or at least how a person can become augmented from the person Freud observed had no reason.
Two notes to this.
First: some interpret the quote as meaning 'endeavour' not 'patience'. Either way, either term must obviously be seen as verb, rather than noun.
Second: Luke is said to have been a doctor. An amusing circumstance - bearing in mind the above, documented.
